Energy security of Europe

As mentioned in the previous post that we are going to talk about the Energy Security and policy in Europe.

We heard some presentations and had discussions on the topic of Energy Security of the State - new challenges for Europe and the world and I came into following conclusions.

Main problems for Europe on energy safety are:

  • No common energy policy towards partners
  • Dependency on energy import
  • Lack of energy mix
  • Growing prices
  • Raising demand for energy, estimated 60% growth to 2030
  • Lack of carbon free energy
  • Nuclear power
  • Percentage of imported energy is estimated to grow to 86%

I find that most important problems in energy security for Europe are:

  • No common policy towards our partners, mainly Russia
  • Increase investments to technologies
  • Alternative routes for energy
  • Decrease of energy consumption

There are no single solutions for those questions, but there are some things on what we can focus to improve the situation.

No common policy towards partners.

We need to form a common European policy towards the countries which supply energy to us. If 27 European Union member states will join their forces and forget their disagreements in energy policy then they can get better terms from partners, mainly Russia on importing energy. Currently we can see that Russia is always on communications with them about energy on power state and they can get the terms what they want.

Increase investments to technologies.

Currently we have been investing and we are paying a lot to so called green energies like wind, solar, hydro and also to ethanol based gasoline and bio-diesel. These technologies are currently still more expensive than fossil fuels and consuming a high amount of bio-fuels which are based on food can raise a food prices around the world.

We should start to invest more money on technologies related to nuclear energy to make it more efficient and safe, so we could adapt it more.

In addition we really need to push a re-search towards new unknown technologies and on making ready for everyday use technologies currently in development like fusion power plants.

Alternative routes for energy transportation

Currently as Europe imports about 60% of used natural gas from abroad and vast majority of it is coming from Russia, which means Europe extremely vulnerable to Russian manipulations. We need to move forward to investigating possibilities and constructing new pipelines to Europe which do not cross Russian territory. Areas for investigations should be in Northern-Africa and Central-Asia.

 Decrease of energy consumption

There have been done studies that energy consumption in Europe will increase by 60% to 2030. We should start educating people more about the facts of energy consumption, like gadgets on standby mode consume almost the same amount of energy as when they are on or change normal light bulb to energy saving ones. Those two are only small examples and more important area is how energy is used for production, but we need to start from somewhere.

All these things are only small points from what we need to start.
